What Does Saudi Arabia, Victoria’s Secret, And Public Radio Have In Common?

Saudi Arabia just passed a law requiring all lingerie shops to be serviced by female employees only. The law give lingerie shops six months to comply. It also requires all cosmetic stores to follow the same requirements within one year.

In addition to mandating female service for female customers, no woman shall be allowed to work before 6 a.m. or after 5 p.m. The government will also require the employers to register each female and to report wages every month.

So what does this have to do with Victoria’s Secret? Victoria’s Secret opened there first store in the middle East in late 2010 in Dubai.  Saudi Arabia opened their first lingerie store in 2009. Women in the Middle East reportedly spend on average more money per capita on intimate apparel, nearly to 800 dollars a year. This in an historically patriarchal  society, where women are required to cover up, and men are allowed to have up to four wives.

Couple those facts with the never ending onslaught of women’s rights issues and news from Mass Media, especially NPR, and the fact that women’s rights was a rallying point to get public opinion on the side for attacking Afghanistan and Libya, and you get a very bleak messag e about the state of women’s rights in the Middle East and North Africa. And yet the intimate apparel market is just a cornerstone f or the Mega-mall plans being laid out by a Western Corporate Globalist consortium. It appears that women’s rights has been, and will again be used an excuse to demand more freedom. But as President bush so eloquently put it after Sept. 11th: “We can’t let the terrorists win. So the best thing we can do as Americans is to go shopping”. Unfortunately America sells only a few things to the rest of the world, I mean besides “freedom”, America is in the business of selling sex (lingerie), drugs (pharmaceuticals) and rock-n-roll (porn ). And if the test monkeys of America are any indication of future sales and profits, than the Middle East is fucked. Congratulations wome n and people of  Saudi Arabia you are now “free”. Free to fuck yourselves over.
